The city of Riverside was founded by a man named John North back in 1870 and a year later the roots were laid for it to become one of the important sources of oranges and other citrus fruits in California. It was also the location of the famed Mission Inn, which evolved into a notable attraction to tourists, movie stars, and even presidents. Today it’s named as one of the Historic Hotels of America. In this way, Riverside became a perfect emblem of the Southern California lifestyle full of orange groves and magnificent residences that led many people to venture out West.
Noted for its Spanish architecture, the Mission Inn still maintains the traditions of its historic past. Some of its many claims to fame include housing numerous presidents including Teddy Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover, John F. Kennedy, and Richard Nixon. President William Taft even had a special chair at the Inn made to accommodate his substantial girth.
Founded in 1970, it was originally run by the Air Force. The museum is now kept up by a nonprofit that still exhibits numerous planes for the viewing public, including many aircraft originating in World War II.
Built in 1929 in the Spanish Colonial Revival Style, the Riverside Fox Theater is central to the arts & culture initiative in Riverside and it went through a major renovation in the late 2000s. It’s notable for being the first theater to screen the colossal blockbuster Gone with the Wind back in 1939.
Acting as an important reminder of Riverside’s fruitful past, this park preserves much of the landscape that has continued to disappear since the days when “Citrus was King.” Especially important to the industry was the navel orange in particular.
Founded back in 1907 as the UC Citrus Experiment Station, the campus began to admit undergraduate student in 1954. In subsequent years UCR has consistently been ranked one of the most ethnically and economically diverse universities in the U.S. It also made the list of best public universities in a 2016 issue of U.S. News & World Report.
