San Bernardino

The city has grown 15.3 percent since the year 2000, as people flock to the sunshine state, California. With impeccable weather throughout the calendar and plentiful fun activities to fill your days, San Bernardino has mountains, beaches, cities, and parks within a short drive. What else makes the city stand out? The Rolling Stones played their first American concert here in 1964. It’s also the largest county in the USA, and it has this peculiar arrow pointing toward the hot springs that Indians believe was a message from God.History

History

Centuries ago, indigenous people thrived on the lands now known as the San Bernardino Valley. They referred to their land as “The Valley of the Cupped Hand of God.” However, around the 1800s, Spanish missionaries trekked from Mexico throughout California preaching to the Indians in effort to convert them to their religion. They chose the valley of San Bernardino as their spot to set up camp. One Spanish missionary, Padre Dumetz, named the land “San Bernardino”, after Saint Bernardino of Siena, an Italian preacher of the Catholic Church. In 1834, the mission period ended, although shortly after the land became a vital trading post for the ‘Spanish Trail’, connecting New Mexico with California. In 1854, San Bernardino officially became incorporated, and shortly after thrived as giant railways converged in the city, making it the heart of Southern California. Then in 1862, the city also dabbled in the gold rush.

Famous Landmark

Arrowhead, Who knew???????

San Bernardino isn’t San Bernardino without the talk of its famous arrowhead – that mysterious rock formation of granite and quartz on the mountainside free from moss and weeds. Why the soil of the arrowhead is vastly different than the nearby soil and the light rock never transformed to match its surroundings remains a bewilderment, but the Indians claim that the arrow was simply burned into the mountainside by the heavens to direct them where to heal. This theory surprisingly isn’t too far-fetched, since the arrow does point to hot and cold springs, which contain healing minerals and natural spas to soothe in. Mormons called the arrowhead “The Ace of Spades”, and today people from around the nation still gather around to speculate the absurd mystery.
